About Five Clicks Left of Left of Center

My mother really believed that she was the only Democrat in Rockwell City, Iowa or in all of Calhoun County if the truth were known. She usually did not talk about politics but I remember growing up knowing that she was a Democrat.

My father on the other hand was apolitical. I remember when Harold Hughes was the Democratic Governor of Iowa. He came to Rockwell City to speak and my dad as the custodian of the school had to open the building for him. My dad came home that night bragging about how the room was empty and that Governor Ray was very upset that no one showed up.

The Governor was from Ida Grove west of Rockwell City so he probably thought that he had at least one friend there. Apparently he did not.

I remember in 1964 watching Governor Scranton of Pennsylvania riding in an open convertible in Fort Dodge during the campaign. Hardly anyone was in that crowd either. Iowa and the presidential campaign has come a long way since then.

I registered as a Democrat in 1964 after I came back from the cold war in Europe at the ripe old age of 22. I have been a Democrat most of the time since except for the period when I lost my mind and became a Republican at the insistence of my Republican Sheriff who was my boss. I changed that as soon as I could after that.

I consider myself to be five clicks to the left of left of center. It always bothers people when they find out that I am a retired police officer and how I am in favor of strict gun control and that we should legalize marijuana. I hate stereotypes. g
