Israel The Land Of The Not So Free

Today is the General Election in Israel. Israel has a Parliament and is structured much the same as England. The head of the party getting the most votes becomes the Prime Minister (President). The ruling party is always made up of a coalition of many parties who come together on some issue that they all can support. It always looks chaotic but it seems to work.

This morning the political pundents in Israel are talking about how the election is really "Us and Them." What it comes down to are the people who supported the recent war against Hamas and those who did not. There is a percentage of voters and citizens in Israel who are not Jewish and are Arab. They did not support the war for obvious reasons and are now being singled out as traitors by the Conservative party in the election. The Conservatives are saying that the Arabs do no have a right to vote or to participate because they are not Jewish. The supporters of Arab rights are saying that this is racist and undemocratic. I would agree. I always thought that Israel was a democracy where people from all over the world had come to live together in peace.

By the way I supported the attacks against Hamas and felt the government of Israel was more than justified to wage that war.

I think we need to keep an eye on what happens today in the election. There could be a dramatic change in what we had come to support for the past fifty years. g
