Let It Snow

After living here for nearly 40 years I have come to be bored to death by snow. The only impact it has on my life today is my apparent lack of ability to get in and out of my garage. I skied every day for the first many years I was here but as I got older and the crowds got bigger I decided to not venture out into the fray.

But, much as corn is important to my native state of Iowa, snow is important to my adopted state of Colorado. We do not grow corn but we do farm snow. We plow it into huge piles of dollars that fuel our economy.

The recent buzz among the mindless letter writers to the local paper is that the Breckenridge Ski Area must expand due to increased pressure of the number of skiers. Hard to imagine but Breckenridge serves double the number of skiers of Vail on half the terrain. Not that Vail is a bad ski area but it is one more pass away from Denver.

Every weekend traffic is backed up for over 80 miles with skiers trying to get to the Summit County Resorts of Arapaho Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain. Those four resorts ski more people than the entire state of Utah.

Our crop has reached harvest time. g
