It Is About Demand Reduction

It Is About Demand Reduction

Last night 60 Minutes had an excellent program describing the problems on the border between Mexico and the United States. No, it had nothing to do with immigration. It was about organized crime and the fact that over 6000 people have been killed in the past year in the wars between the drug lords in Mexico.

This past week more than 700 people were arrested in the United States for being part of the drug cartels in Mexico. The Cartels are even in Alaska and North Dakota.

The problem is not organized crime or the drug lords. The problem is the large demand for illegal drugs in the United States. If there was no business there would be no crime. End of story.

I have always supported legalizing marijuana and then making heroin and cocaine prescription drugs and then tax it heavily.

The demand will never go away. It is the same as prohibition and people will always want alcohol, which is a legal drug, the same way they want all of the other drugs.

Let's put the drug lords out of business by eliminating their customers. We will never stop it otherwise.

This is not a recent phenomenon. There has been a demand for illegal drugs for centuries. In fact they have only been illegal for about 100 years. Making them illegal did not reduce the demand and it certainly did not slow down the drug dealers. g
