Forty years ago this weekend 500,000 of my friends and neighbors gathered to listen to some tunes on a farm in upstate New York.

It was not held in Woodstock because that location did not work out. Neither did the second location. It was held in the third location in Bethel but it was still called Woodstock. It has had an identity crises ever since then.

My good friend Ralph went to Woodstock but I did not.

I stayed home.

Ralph was one of my partners in the New York City Police Department and he and I were in a group of about 400 police officers hired to work security at the event.

I stayed home.

Ralph went and had a great time and brought a Woodstock security t shirt back for me.

It has been so long that I can't remember the reason that I stayed home but I am sure that it was a good reason.
