During these economically stressed times many people want to know what is the key to success.  Many of my students in my college classes are older and unemployed.  They are looking for the "magic bullet" to a great job that will carry them to health, wealth and success in life.  It is the same as putting the cart before the horse.  You could have ten college degrees and still not find a good job.  Most people are wandering in the wilderness without a goal or a destination.  What I am about to say is not original.  It has been said in many ways by many people.  One of my first encounters with this was in the book, "Do what you love and the money will follow."  Think about what you like to do and then do it.  If you have a passion for that thing then you will be successful.  The problem with that is that some people love to drink or do drugs.  Some people like to take long naps and sleep late every morning.  So doing what you love in those cases will not cause money to follow unless what you love includes working very hard toward your goals.  This is what I agree with and what I have seen written and practiced successfully in my life.  Find your passion and then focus on your passion and you will be successful.  I know that this works.  For most people the real issue is finding your passion.  This is an exercise in self analysis.  I can normally talk to someone for less than thirty minutes and find their passion based solely on what they talk about.  What you say is really an outward indication of what your mind contains.  This does not relate only to employment or making money.  Many moms and dads find that their passion is raising their kids and their home.  This is always very obvious in seeing their home and how their family interacts.  You might even ask a family member or a friend to tell you what they thing your passion is in life.  I am sure it they know you very well they can tell you immediately.

The Smartest Person In The Room

I have taught at the college level since 1970, over 42 years.  Even after all of that I laugh at many college professors because they delude themselves into believing that they are the smartest person in their college classroom.  They probably are not the smartest person in the room.  They may have more degrees or know more about the subject or have taught for a long time but the smartest person in the room might very well be the quiet young student in the back of the room who studies very hard, works very hard and has a IQ that is so high it cannot be measured.  We must accept the possibility that the professor is not the smartest person in the room.

I believe that leaders are born and not made.  Leadership and management schools merely take people with a natural leadership talent and make them better.  I feel it is impossible to make someone a good leader.  It is the old nature or nurture argument.  I think it is nature and not nurture.  If  you watch children playing in a playground at age three, after about five minutes you can identify the leaders among the children.  If you were to track them into their adult lives you would be amazed at how many of the leaders on the playground are leaders as adults.  From a distance you can see the little girl or little boy who is in charge of what is going on at the playground.  It is easy to see who the children are listening to and following as they play.  Check it out and you will see that it is true.

Gay Rights

You may not be gay or know anyone who is gay or be related to anyone who is gay but gay rights is, in fact, one of your rights.  Anytime anyone tries to inhibit anyone's freedom then they are inhibiting freedom for all of us.  You may not agree with a gay lifestyle and feel that it is opposed to your most basic moral or religious standards but once someone tries to take gay rights away you are next in line to lose your rights also.  You are not agreeing that a gay lifestyle is correct or is something that you approve of but you are saying that the United States of America is based on freedom and that freedom includes a person's sexual preference.  Would you want someone to take your sexual preference away from you?
